Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
