Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
