Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
